Membership is open to any man able to sing in tune and prepared to make a commitment to attend rehearsals and concerts. The ability to read music is not a necessity but a willingness to learn song words and the music is essential. We do not use sheet music when we perform in public and often sing in a variety of languages (learnt phonetically). Our conductor may carry out an initial voice test to ascertain which of the voice sections is the most suitable for prospective members.
Benefits We aim for a very high standard of performance at concerts and work hard to achieve this at rehearsals. We have a lot of fun and personal satisfaction from doing this well. Following concerts, we often gather at local hostelries for drinks, conversation and a "ram-sammy" where we sing for our own pleasure and entertainment. In the photo the choir are seen enjoying a ram-sammy under the enthusiastic control of one of Bass singers, Derek Fordham, just after taking part in the Golden Nightingale Competition in February 2008. At ram-sammies, our conductor is allowed to rest his baton and leave conducting to one of our members - usually Derek!
As can be seen in About Us, we plan at least one weekend away in the UK every year and organise occasional trips abroad. Our spouses
travel with us so this feature of choir life is particularly enjoyable.
Rehearsals take place each Tuesday at the Haydock Conservative Club, Belleraphon Way, Haydock WA11 0GT at 8:00pm (opposite Tesco) and each Friday at the St. Helens Parish Church Hall, Church Street, St. Helens WA10 1AF at 7:15pm
If you would like to find out more, why not come to a rehearsal? You will be made most welcome. Please contact
Alan Gaskell by email or telephone 01744 734176. Alternatively speak to any choir member whom you may know - see Members for a list of names.
