Touring
Since the mid 1970s, touring has become a regular and pleasurable feature of choir life - in fact a real perk for all members and their wives, as a subsidy has been offered from time to time from choir funds. We have travelled widely in England, Wales and Scotland and to many countries abroad. We have visited Germany nine times and developed friendships in California and Chicago as a result of three trips. In 2003, one of our members David Dunbavin with wife, Gael, emigrated to the south of France. He was able to arrange a week-long tour for a party of 45 singers and 40 wives. We sang at four concerts but had plenty of free time for sightseeing and enjoying the wonderful weather.

May 2007, saw us enjoying a long weekend in the Isle of Man participating in the Island Music Festival where we were happy to be awarded the Ainsworth Cup for winning the Male Voice Competition. We also stayed at the magnificent Sefton Hotel, right on the sea-front in Douglas which probably ranks as the most luxurious hotel we have ever stayed while away with the choir

In September 2008, we travelled to Plymouth for a weekend to take part in a joint concert with the Laira Youth Band which was founded and is still run by Tony Hollick - our Principal Accompanist, Ruth’s father. Interestingly, Ruth’s two brothers, two sisters (and brother-in-law) are members of the Band together with their mother. We gathered on the Sunday at Plymouth Barbican in glorious sunshine to sing to several hundred people who were there enjoying the sun as can be seen in the photograph above.

Two years later we again travelled to the South-West again to spend a weekend, this time based in Torquay and driving over to Plymouth to share the platform with the Laira Band.

In September 2012, we spent a week in Tenby, West Wales taking part in the Annual Tenby Music Festival. We were ansolutely delighted that our concert performance resulted in a standing ovation - a fantastic accolade in this Land of Song.

Our next trip is a return to the Isle of Man in October when we will be competing in the Music Competition. The total party will be made up of about 90 singers and wives/partners together with our three professional musicians. See Diary for actual dates.
